09 Dec 2013 | Categories: Indie Music Monday | Posted by: Jenavive

Christmas is coming!

This Monday we decided to get festive and let Calgary band The Jingles tickle your Christmas Spirit. I really love how much fun they have! Really makes it hard to bah humbug.

This Saturday they have a FREE ALL AGES SHOW at The House Coffee Sanctuary in Kensington. They are definitely worth checking out. Maybe you’ll even catch the Christmas bug. For a preview of what to expect check out this video. They also have tons of live video on their YouTube page.

Lola’s Pub – Cornwall

Home away from home. Lola’s could be the set of a small town sitcom. Full of character and oddball individuals. We met the most interesting people. Had THE BEST pulled pork sandwich ever!!! And put on a great show to a pumped and receptive audience. By the end of our three sets I’m pretty sure people were singing the words to Deceiver and Greedy. Cornwall and the people at Lola’s (Thinking of you Robin!) were so welcoming we will definitely add it as a place to stop every time we’re in the neighbourhood. We’re part of the family now!

Come for the food. Stay for the entertainment.

Rooftop photoshoot at The Garrick Hotel

gary

Winnipeg has a bad reputation. Most people cringe a little when you mention it. Our experience was mixed. June is definitely a great time to visit. It’s as green as it’s going to get and the locals are out and about in a summer state of mind. We were warmly received by the folk at the Garrick Hotel (https://www.facebook.com/GarrickHotelWinnipeg). Owner Gary took care of us and made us feel right at home. A highlight was definitely the rooftop photoshoot after the show.

10 Reasons why Live Local Music is Better Than Going to a Movie.

10 Reasons why Live Local Music is Better Than Going to a Movie.

10. It’s cheaper. Most local shows are $5 to $10 bucks for 4 hours of entertainment. Movies are around $15 but with 3D and IMAX tickets get expensive quickly.

9. You can talk to your friends and not get yelled at for being a dick.

This would never happen at one of our shows

8. A chance to show off your sweet dance moves.

Tina! Come get some ham!

7. Girls will talk to you because of your excellent taste in music and superior social skills. Number 5 greatly helps your cause.

6. No children. Most shows are +18 plus.  This means you get to enjoy some guilt free adult entertainment.

5. Alcohol. For the same price of a theatre pop you can enjoy a delicious draft beer. *Note* better with friends.

The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems.

4. You can take a pee break whenever you want.   No more waiting for the slow part of the movie wondering if your bladder will explode.

3. Your facebook profile will look way more exciting.

This lady is having the best day OF HER LIFE!

2. You will get to hangout with cool bands.

1. That popcorn was making you fat anyway.

Turns out "Baby, Baby, Baby" was about Justin's love addiction for popcorn.

Indie Music Monday - The Implicate Order

Calgary Rockers – The Implicate Order

We recently discovered a new female fronted indie rock band from Calgary named The Implicate Order.  After a quick listen to their 7 track album ‘Hollow Process’ on bandcamp, we were all hooked.  Their music is reminiscent of early No Doubt alt rock feel, mixed with Paramore style vocals.

They sound great on the record, and even better live. The guys and I were able to make it out to their recent gig at Lord Nelson’s Pub on 8th ave. The show was high energy, and filled with intricate playing and headbanging breakdowns. It’s impossible not to groove on the dance floor while they rock out.

The band consists of mega hot vocalist and rhythm guitarist Christina Lacowicz, guitarist Gene Lachica, bass player Tyler Allard and drummer Josh Nadeau.

I cannot wait to share the stage with them at our EP release party, at Dickens Pub on February 28th. Dancing pants required.

Music

My personal favorites are Boardwalk and Wrong Hole.

If you like what you hear, you can buy the album ‘Hollow Process’ for $5 on Bandcamp, or stream it for free!

Calgary is home to many great musicians.  A great way to keep track of other local acts, venues, and stores in the Calgary area is MusicYYC.ca.  Run by Colleen Krueger, MusicYYC acts as a directory, showcasing many different artists, their bios, artwork, and where you can find and buy their music.

Check out their site and send some traffic their way.  If you are a local band looking to be listed on their directory, check out their submit page.

Indie Music Monday – Transit

Categories: Indie Music Monday | Posted by: Jenavive

Tony and I were lucky enough to grab last minute tickets to Transit’s fist pumping CD release show this past Saturday at UofC’s Mac Hall Ballroom. Transit’s latest album, Stale, was officially released January 3rd, 2013. You can sample and buy the album here: http://transit1.bandcamp.com/album/stale-4

If you love hip hop you will not be disappointed.

The show was packed with awesome performances and special guests like Jesse-James Cameron from Makeshift Innocence (www.iriemi.com), Joe Nolan (www.joenolansongs.com) and Sykamore. Newcomer The Blue rocked the stage performing a powerful duet with Transit and beat-savvy DJ Crosswalk (www.facebook.com/dothecrosswalk) kept the tracks and filanthrofists going all night.

Overall we were completely blown away by this high-energy jam-packed show.

Honorable Mentions:
N.e Natural Ensemble (www.naturalensemble.com)
The Bagpiper who should up for the last song
